Carlton Court House, La Mama Theatre |
|
With more than 10,000 people attending theatrical performances every year at the former Carlton Courthouse, this recycled building has every bit the vibrant new life historic buildings need once they outlive their original use.
Melbourne's La Mama theatre company has been using the building as a second theatre space for twenty years and according to director Liz Jones, the Victorian Gothic Revival building works brilliantly as a theatre space.
It's fully utilised almost every day and night for rehearsals and performances - especially when we need a larger capacity.
Mint Inc completely restored the building including everything from its limestone façade to refurbishing the original courthouse timber furniture.
"They didn't just restore the original features, but all the amenities are much more user friendly so that people really enjoy working here. It used to be quite an austere working environment - now it's a far more lovable space," Ms Jones added.
