Locating the thriving Mint Bar and Bistro in the Northern Guardhouse of the former Royal Mint, is a classic win-win according to manager, Pierre Van Der Heyde.
Melbourne's former Royal Mint complex was built between 1869-72 and is architecturally significant as one of the most impressive 19th Century government buildings in Victoria.
The Northern Guardhouse had been empty for many years until Mint Inc assumed management in 1998. Minor restoration work was undertaken before it was leased as a bar and restaurant.
Mr Van Der Heyde said, "The heritage features of the former Mint appeal to a specific market, helping distinguish our business from other hospitality retailers.
What's the point of preserving historic buildings if nobody has the chance to enjoy them? Instead of being locked up and empty, this beautiful building is now open for the community to enjoy.
We have worked closely within the guidelines established by the Mint Inc to develop the interior and exterior fit-out.
This really is win-win. The heritage values have been maintained, whilst we have modernised certain parts of the building to secure its future.
With support from the Mint Inc we have been able to lift the turnover and profit and the business is starting to become very successful in its own right," Mr Van Der Heyde said. |
