Royal Mint Car Park

The area at the rear of the former Royal Mint at 280 William Street Melbourne was once the site of the various sections of the Royal Mint industrial buildings where Australian coins were minted. These buildings were situated around a central courtyard and placed away from the surrounding brick walls. On the La Trobe street side were a number of furnaces and some chimney stacks which vented the Melting Room and the Crushing Room. Nearby were the Chlorine room, the Coal Shed and some stores and toilets.  Along the rear east wall were the Engine Room, the Drying Room, the Bullion Room and the Blacksmith Shop amongst other various rooms. Along the south wall were the Weighing Room and the Engineers Room.

From 1960 onwards the plant and equipment was gradually sold and the old buildings demolished except for the Main Building, the Northern Guardhouse and the Southern Gatehouse. After the advent of decimal currency the mint functions were fully transferred to Canberra in 1968. For many years the area was left unsealed and used for free parking for cars in government use and the area was overseen by government employees working from the Southern Gatehouse.

In 1998 the entire former Royal Mint site was handed to Mint Inc Committee of Management which oversaw the sealing and marking of the car park area to enable it to be used as a private car park to generate funds to restore the other buildings on the site. This popular city car park now contains 179 car spaces and is managed by Mint Inc with an employee on site from 6 am to 7 pm during weekdays.
